Whitworth Mural

Mural Design, Illustration, Environmental Design

I was commissioned, along with other students in Graphic Design II, to create a mural for Whitworth’s Hawthorne Hall. The mural’s goal was to create a unique art piece that would capture the spirit of Whitworth’s Advancement and Continuing Studies departments, which both are located in Hawthorne Hall.

The Marketing directors of the Advancement and Continuing studies gave our team 5 words to integrate into the Mural:

Leadership

Wonder

Tenacity

Faith

Purpose

Our team then brainstormed moments, figures, and icons from Whitworth's history and local Spokane culture, as well as a variety of mural styles which we presented to the clients.

Process

After presenting two concepts for styling to the client, they decided on a clean, mature look, and we began to brainstorm ways to incorporate figures from Whitworth’s history, the 5 words, and a scene of Spokane into the mural.

Rough Draft

Here is the first rough draft the team came up with, mostly to get a layout of the components.

Components

We worked on three layers of the mural, planning to lay each on top of each other to create a dimensional, 3D effect. The planned mural would incorporate interactive elements, as well as photos of Spokane leaders, and highlights of the Spokane landscape.
