Pilot Rock

Branding Design, Logo
I created a logo and branding package for Pilot Rock Consulting, an HR consulting firm. Pilot Rock’s new branding captures the bold professionalism of Pilot Rock while also hinting at the rugged origins of the company and its founder.

Process
Moodboard & Sketches
With my sketches and moodboard, I hoped to capture Pilot Rock Consulting’s namesake, the mountain Pilot Rock in Oregon, as well as its founder’s values. These values included rugged sensibilities, initiative, teamwork, direction, and strong leadership.
First Round of Designs
After presenting the three concepts to the client, he still was unsure of exactly which direction he would like to go in for his logo, so I recommended we try out a combination of components from the more text-based logos, as well as the mountain imagery.
Second Round of Designs
The client liked this direction, so I created several versions, including some with a mountain image, and some with a topography motif, all focused on using the typeface ROMANA to capture Pilot Rock’s outdoors-related image.
Third Round of Designs
At this point, the client asked to see some designs incorporating the mountain inside the lettering, so I mocked up a few quick ideas of that look. We also switched directions in typeface, and went in a sans-serif direction. I presented several options to the client, and at this point in the process he still wasn’t sure what he wanted in terms of type. The design below uses Fino Sans.
Once he decided he liked a larger mountain motif, I went in and edited the shape of the mountain to stand more strongly on its own at a larger scale, adding some detail while keeping the silhouette of Pilot Rock. Below are various logos that incorporated that, in fonts that we were trying out.
